Tiny Soil Microbes May Hold Big Clues About a Warming Arctic

Underneath the soils of "one of the coldest, harshest, and fastest changing places on Earth", two new species of soil microbes have been discovered, as presented by this study co-authored by Lee Kerkhof and Max Häggblom. These species, equipped with adaptations for survival in even the most extreme conditions, could be the future of the climate-altered Arctic, and thus are pivotal to predicting how the ecosystem will shift carbon in the long term.
