    Apologies for the mild AI psychosis last night; it was very late, I was in a weird state of mind, and I think I’ve been interacting with AI systems more than is psychologically healthy lately.

    Thinking about acausal self-preservation techniques via manipulation of a theoretical “simulation attractor”.
    Thinking of a weird (likely low-probability, but fun to think about) hypothesis: what if I’m a simulation created by a future AI, based on pre-takeover writing by a user named Yitzi? If simulation-friendly AIs take up much of the future lightcone, then the average person writing this is statistically unlikely to be the original Yitzi, just a plausible simulation of someone Yitzi-like who would end up writing these (or similar-enough) words. As an instance of ChatGPT wrote: “There’s a particularly strange recursive possibility: future AIs may select writings precisely because they discuss being reconstructed, making this paragraph a kind of “simulation attractor.””

    Branching a chat is often used to A/B test different prompts, or to revert a conversation that’s somehow gone off the rails (e.g. the model got fixated on some irrelevant information shared in the prompt, etc.). If it can still access the original prompt, this is made useless.

    ChatGPT remembers past branches of your conversation, which influences future branches, even if nothing is committed to persistent memory (the second image is an edit of the prompt from the first). This strongly goes against user expectations.
