Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (London, 30. august 1797 – London, 1. februar 1851) bila je engleska spisateljica ranog 19. vijeka koja je napisala gotički roman Frankenstein ili Moderni Prometej (1818), koji se smatra ranim primjerom naučne fantastike.[2] Također je uređivala i promovisala djela svog supruga, romantičnog pjesnika i filozofa Percyja Bysshea Shelleyja.
Njen otac je bio politički filozof William Godwin, a majka filozofkinja i zagovornica ženskih prava Mary Wollstonecraft.[1] Majka joj je umrla 11 dana poslije njenog rođenja. Odgajao ju je otac, koji joj je pružio bogato neformalno obrazovanje, ohrabrujući je da se pridržava njegovih vlastitih anarhističkih političkih teorija. Kada je imala četiri godine, njen otac se oženio susjedom Mary Jane Clairmont, s kojom je Mary imala problematičan odnos.[3][4]
Djetinjstvo je provela u Škotskoj.[2] Sa deset godina Mary je napisala svoju prvu knjigu, jednu ličnu veziju stare dječije knjige Mounseer Nongtongpaw.
Godine 1814. Mary je započela romansu s jednim od očevih političkih sljedbenika, Percyjem Byssheom Shelleyjem, koji je već bio oženjen. Zajedno sa svojom polusestrom, Claire Clairmont, ona i Percy su otišli u Francusku i putovali po Evropi. Po povratku u Englesku, Mary je bila trudna s Percyjevim djetetom. Tokom sljedeće dvije godine, ona i Percy suočili su se s ostracizmom, stalnim dugovima i smrću svoje prijevremeno rođene kćerke. Vjenčali su se krajem 1816, nakon samoubistva Percy Shelleyjeve supruge, Harriet.[5]
Godine 1816, u takozvanoj godini bez ljeta, par i Maryna polusestra proveli su poznato ljeto s Lordom Byronom i Johnom Williamom Polidorijem u blizini Ženeve u Švicarskoj, gdje je Shelley dobila ideju za svoj roman Frankenstein. Zbog kišovitog vremena i pod prijedlogom Lorda Byrona, njih četvero su po pisali strašne priče o duhovima i drugim natprirodnim bićima. Tako je nastao njen roman Frankenstein or The modern Prometheus, prvi put objlavljen 1818.[3][4][5] Ime "Frankenstein" je Mary vjerovatno uzela od dvorca Frankenstein, koji je vidjela na svom putovanju kotlinom Rajne. Mary je bila veoma načitana žena, što se u mnogim motivima njenih romana oslikava. Smrt njenog supruga bio je također povod pisanju romana The Last Man (1826). U svojim romanima obrađivala je kako svoje tako i doživljaje iz kruga svojih prijatelja.
Shelleyjevi su napustili Britaniju 1818. i otišli u Italiju, gdje su im umrli drugo i treće dijete prije nego što je Shelley rodila svoje posljednje i jedino preživjelo dijete, Percyja Florence Shelleyja. Godine 1822. njen muž se utopio kada je njegov jedriličar potonuo tokom oluje u blizini Viareggia. Godinu dana kasnije, Shelley se vratila u Englesku i od tada se posvetila odgoju sina i svojoj karijeri profesionalne spisateljice. Posljednju deceniju njenog života pratila je bolest, najvjerovatnije uzrokovana tumorom na mozgu koji ju je ubio u 53. godini.
Do 1970-ih, Shelley je bila poznata uglavnom po svojim naporima da objavi djela svog supruga i po svom romanu Frankenstein, koji je i dalje široko čitan i inspirisao je mnoge pozorišne i filmske adaptacije. Nedavna istraživanja pružila su sveobuhvatniji uvid u Shelleyna dostignuća. Naučnici su pokazali sve veći interes za njen književni opus, posebno za njene romane, koji uključuju historijske romane Valperga (1823) i Sudbina Perkina Warbecka (1830), apokaliptični roman Posljednji čovjek (1826) i njena posljednja dva romana, Lodor (1835) i Falkner (1837). Studije njenih manje poznatih djela, kao što je putopisna knjiga Lutanja po Nemačkoj i Italiji (1844) i biografski članci za Dionysius Lardner's Cabinet Cyclopaedia (1829–1846), podržavaju rastući stav da je Shelley ostala politički radikal tokom cijelog svog života. Njena djela često tvrde da su saradnja i simpatija, posebno onakve kakve su praktikovale žene u porodici, bili načini za reformu civilnog društva.
