Coldstream is a district municipality in the province of British Columbia, Canada. It is located in the Okanagan Valley region and is in the North Okanagan regional district.
The population of Coldstream was 11,171 as reported by the 2021 Canadian census.[1] The mayor of Coldstream is Ruth Hoyte.[2] Coldstream is known for hiking and mountain biking trails along Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park and Protected Area, as well as, Kalamalka Lake.
Before Europeans, Syilx Indigenous peoples lived in the area for years. In 1863, European contact was made when Charles Frederick Houghton, along with Forbes George Vernon and Charles Albert Vernon visited the area. Both Vernon's moved on but Houghton stayed behind and lived with the Syilx peoples. While exploring the area, he discovered Kalamalka Lake and a stream running through the valley and into the lake. Houghton named this running water "coldstream" and requested a military grant near the banks of the lake.[3]
