Book 4 of S.M. Stirling’s Emberverse III series, published in October 2017. These books are set in the same world as the “Dies the Fire” trilogy and the “The Change” series (Emberverse II, The Sunrise Lands).

Prince John Arminger Mackenzie, younger brother of Crown Princess Órlaith, takes center stage as the children born after the Change and their children battle against powers that are not sympathetic to humans and human concerns.

Sequel to The Golden Princess. Crown Princess Órlaith of Montival and the new Empress Reiko of Japan and a small band of followers have set out to recover Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi, the Grass-Cutting Sword, a sacred symbol of the Japanese dynasty, that will help in the coming battles against powers that are not sympathetic to humans and human concerns.

In the anthology The Change: Tales of Downfall and Rebirth, S. M. Stirling is joined by some of the best science fiction writers to expand the rich Emberverse world. In his own story “Hot Night at the Hopping Toad,” Stirling continues  his tales of the High Kingdom of Montival. The other stories portray fortune seekers, voyagers, and dangers—from the ruins of Sydney to the Republic of Fargo and Northern Alberta to Venetian and Greek galleys clashing in the Mediterranean.
