Here’s a behind the scenes look as our Castle and Garden teams carefully guided the LEGO @thebowesmuseum model into its new home at Glamis Castle, following its 223 mile journey from County Durham. The model will soon be ready to welcome its first visitors during this weekend’s Snowdrop Festival! 🧱🏰
Built from an extraordinary 40,000 LEGO bricks and measuring 1.8 metres in length, it’s one of the largest projects ever undertaken by LEGO artist Steve Mayes, @brickthis . Completed in just over six months in 2010, the piece was originally showcased as the centrepiece of the “LEGO Building The Bowes Museum” exhibition.
Its arrival at Glamis Castle feels especially fitting, given the historic ties between the Bowes family and the estate – the ancestral home of the Bowes Lyon family and the Scottish childhood home of Lady Elizabeth Bowes Lyon (Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother).

On this day, we remember HRH Princess Margaret👑
Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, passed away on 9 February 2002, aged 71. Born at Glamis Castle in 1930, her mother’s Scottish ancestral home, she held a lifelong and deeply personal connection to this place 🏰
Glamis was where Princess Margaret spent treasured childhood days alongside her sister, Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II), exploring the gardens, riding horses, and creating memories she would cherish throughout her life 💙
The photograph captures Princess Margaret during one of her visits, riding at Glamis. The horse, Llevero, was HRH The Prince of Wales’ (now HM King Charles) Argentinian polo pony, kindly gifted to Lady Mary Strathmore after Llevero retired.
Visitors to the Castle Gardens can pause at Princess Margaret’s Memorial, located beyond the Italian Garden along a peaceful avenue of yew hedges 🌿
Erected in 2006, the memorial was designed by the 18th Earl of Strathmore and Fred Stephens, and built by Watson & Sons Stonemasons of St Andrews using stone quarried in County Durham. The wording seen today was suggested by Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II during her visit in 2018, ensuring it reflects that her sister was born at Glamis Castle.
Originally created as a centrepiece with the urn, the memorial was later expanded to form the full installation seen today. The field behind it was once an avenue leading to Forfar, and visitors could once glimpse the steeple of a church, now hidden by the surrounding landscape. The memorial stands as a quiet and lasting tribute to Princess Margaret’s lifelong bond with Glamis.
