Iron Bartender Finale Tonight

Wednesday January 14, 2009
Looking for some fun this evening? Come witness the finale of the annual Iron Bartender Championship, which searches for Austins best and most innovative bartender.

After several rounds of elimination tournaments over the past 15 weeks, the final two bartenders competing for the title tonight are Justin Lerma of Hayashi Modern Japanese Cuisine and Brian Bourgeois of Kenichi.

The event will be in the downtown lounge GRUV (101 W. Fifth Street). Each bartender will be asked to make a variety of special concoctions on the spot, some using a special ingredient. The drinks will be judged by a panel using a strict set of criteria. Come watch the intense competition and dance the night away!

Strayhorn to Announce Run for Mayor

Sunday January 11, 2009
Carole Keeton Strayhorn, who ran unsuccessfully for Texas governor in 2006, will announce her candidacy for mayor of Austin on Monday, according to KVUE.

The 69-year-old politician, who called herself "One Tough Grandma" in the gubernatorial campaign, was the first female (and youngest) mayor of Austin in 1977 and was later the State Comptroller. She filed her paperwork to run for mayor in November, but the announcement will be official tomorrow.

Her competitor will be Mayor Pro-Tem. Brewster McCracken, though more may join the race. The election is on May 9.

Austin Symphony to Perform at Local High Schools

Sunday January 11, 2009
Last night the Austin Symphony performed with pianist Garrick Ohlsson, but they are already hard at work on their next event. Later this month, they will tour five Austin high schools.

Many students dont realize their cell phone ringtones are based on traditional classical songs. Because the title sponsor of this tour is AT&T;, the symphony will perform classical songs heard often in the form of popular ringtones.

The teen winners of the Austin Symphony Youth Awards will perform along with the symphony, and each show will conclude with the schools fight song conducted by their own music director. The 45-minute performances will be in the school gyms.

Here is the schedule:
January 27, 2009: 10:00 & 11:15 AM - McNeil H.S.
January 27, 2009: 2:00 PM - Anderson High School
January 28, 2009: 10:30 AM - Austin High School
January 28, 2009: 2:30 AM - LBJ High School
January 29, 2008: 2:00 PM - Bowie High School
