2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.
Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.
The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results:
We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).
In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)
We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:
We also sincerely thank to all 4070 voters for participating and we hope you will return for next year's contest in early 2015. We invite you to continue to participate in the Commons community by sharing your work.
Thanks, the Picture of the Year committee

Hello. You were concerned regarding some maps which were up for deletion. As I understand, you are concerned because you feel that there are not appropriate replacements? Would you tell me which maps are of most importance to you, and I can see to it that replacements are produced? (Lilic (talk) 06:10, 20 September 2014 (UTC)). Hello again. I took a look at what is going on, and some of the maps are not so good, and it makes sense to delete some. But, I do feel that it would be very useful for some to be replaced by images which are appropriate. So, when you have the time do let me know which you feel are the most important, and I'll see what I can do to help. :) (Lilic (talk) 06:25, 20 September 2014 (UTC)).Reply
The thing is that he is right to nominate stuff. The maps are indeed violating copyright due to the borders. It's not a big deal, for me it is easy to make replacements, so the offer still stands if you're interested. (Lilic (talk) 17:11, 20 September 2014 (UTC)).Reply

Hello MaGa, thanks for working on this wiki in your language. We updated the list of priority translations and I write you to let you know. The language used by this wiki (or by you in your preferences) needs about 100 translations or less in the priority list. You're almost done!
To add or change translations for all wikis, please use translatewiki.net, the MediaWiki localisation project.

Thanks for uploading File:Kosovo map-hr.svg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.
Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Thanks for noticing the change. To note that we are starting to set up wmania:Wikimania and it will be a permanent home for all the wikimanias. The hope is to have it as an ongoing wiki with translations, so I do hope that you will be able to assist there. I definitely want all the gadgets and sidebar messages to have available translations. Give us a week to get some more parts in place and then do please review what I have copied for HR. — billinghurstsDrewth06:20, 2 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
Simply edit the talk page, it will do a little magic to identify it needs updating, and categorise for action. I will make a note to that effect in the templates. — billinghurstsDrewth11:31, 11 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, although I would have uploaded it under a new name (just like how the Hungarian version was updated)—overwriting existing files is generally discouraged as it causes inadvertent changes where the file is used (even outside of Wikimedia, which isn’t tracked in the usage section), and makes the previous versions impossible to use in articles (for example the Hungarian version is used in articles about previous elections, where usage of the new name would be inappropriate). If you agree with me, please upload the new version under a new name and revert this one to the 2006 state (as indicated by the file name). Anyways, thanks again for the update! —Tacsipacsi (talk) 16:41, 8 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Bok. Možemo popričati dalje o tome, baš me zanimaju i druga mišljenja. --Vhorvat (talk) 17:29, 13 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
"gemajnde1" "gemajnde2" itd. --Vhorvat (talk) 14:20, 14 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

—Ivi10416:08, 8 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi everyone,
Wikimedia Commons is pleased to finally announce the winners of this year's Picture of the Year 2025 contest! We had some truly incredible finalists to choose from, but the community has spoken.
Here are your top three winning images:
First place: The aftermath of an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on October 9, 2023, leaving widespread destruction in the Rimal area. Attribution: WAFA (Q2915969) / CC-BY-SA 3.0
Second place: Baby cape fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus) sleeping at Cape cross, Namibia. Attribution: Giles Laurent / CC-BY-SA 4.0
Third place: A gigantic jet photographed from the International Space Station by astronaut Nichole Ayers. Attribution: public domain
You can view the full results and see where all your favorite images placed here: Full 2025 Results
I also want to highlight what an incredible turnout we had. In the second round, we saw a massive jump in both the number of users voting and the total votes cast. We had exactly 13,979 votes cast by 3,509 users! To put that in perspective, last year we had 7,403 votes from 2,837 users. It is amazing to see that level of growth and community engagement.
Thank you to everyone who voted, helped organize, and generally made the contest such a huge success this year!
