Anise (Pimpinella anisum), also referred to as anís and aniseed, is a flowering plant in the family Apiaceae that is native to the eastern Mediterranean region and southwest Asia. Anise is known for its unique flavor profile, having strong notes of liquorice, with hints of fennel and tarragon.
Anise was used to make claret, a spiced wine popular during the Middle Ages (not to be confused with clairet).
