The California Republic, also known as the Bear Flag Republic, was an unrecognized nation that broke away from Mexico. Its existence lasted only 25 days, from 14 June 1846 until being annexed into the United States on 9 July 1846, as a result of the Mexican–American War. It was one of the shortest nations to ever lived in history.

The most significant thing during and after its lifespan is the flag, which is now adopted by the modern state of California (which is its successor). It had a star, a bear, and the words California Republic. Peter Storm was believed to be the man who created the flag. The flag was created one week before the storming of Sonoma, in which the revolts (mostly Americans) fought against the Mexicans and created their own country during the Mexican–American War before becoming a U.S. state.[3][4]
