9 soft skills to accelerate your career: 1. Make People Feel Important (SHR Method) Your formula to be charismatic: Seen • Give eye contact • Offer a specific compliment Heard • Ask good questions • Be interested, not interesting Remembered • Follow up • Remember name(s) • Recall something you discussed — 2. Hone Your Body Language (7-38-55 Rule) People will like/dislike your communication based on: • 7% words • 38% tonality and face • 55% body language Stand up straight, pull your shoulders back, make eye contact, smile, give a firm handshake... You will be dangerous. — 3. Master the 4-Bullet Update Powerful people are busy. (They might not remember what they asked you to do.) Give an update with this outline: • Here's what you asked me to do • Here's what I did • Here are the risks/blockers (if any) • If given more time, I'd do this — 4. Record and Study Your Speaking The best communicator I know told me her secret: She records her calls. Then she replays them, studies them (like an athlete watching game film). You'll cut 'ums' and 'likes.' 99.9% won't do this. Be the outlier. — 5. Ask Rapport-Building Questions Your network is your net worth. Build bonds with these Qs: • What neighborhood are you in? • Do you have any siblings/kids? • How'd you meet your partner? (if mentioned) • Any fun upcoming trips? Simple, but most people miss this. — 6. Send 'Friday Highlights' If you're new to a team, do this to build trust. Every Friday, send your supervisor(s) a short email. Two parts: 1) Highlights from the prior week • Big tasks completed • People networked with • Extracurriculars (like affinity groups) 2) Upcoming activities for next week • Forward-looking big tasks and networking Friday Highlights will help you: • Build trust • Hold yourself accountable • Tactfully self-promote (perception is reality) • Have everything you need for self-reviews — 7. Don't Complain or Gossip. Ever. Nobody likes to hear complaining. So why do we do it ourselves? (Respectfully standing up for yourself is different.) Separately, when you talk bad about others, people wonder if you talk bad about them too. Just don't do it. — 8. Remember ALL the Names A person's favorite sound is their name. I have a theory about their 2nd favorite sound: The names of their loved ones and pets. Whenever you hear one mentioned, write it down. Later, ask *by name* about them. You will stand out. — 9. Give Yourself a Personal MBA Willingness to learn is a crucial soft skill. I wrote a popular thread on how to give yourself a personal MBA (in 6 months). All it takes to finish? Read 30 mins daily. — 📌 Want to receive a high-res PDF of this one-pager? 1. Follow Ben Meer 2. ♻️ Repost to help your network 3. 🤝 Soft skills take you from just another #Data and #Analytics techie, to unicorn status. 🦄 🛠️ Being able to write code, build a model and visualise data will tick the technical skills box, but how do you stand out when you’re exploring new opportunities? Highlighting your soft skills like storytelling, communication and collaboration using my A-I-R framework (Action - Impact - Result ,🔗 https://lnkd.in/gtCcHNN9) provides a structured approach to showcasing your achievements with impact. A good example is… 🟢 Action – I built a dashboard for the Leadership team to track sales of a new product. 🟢 Impact – Stakeholders were able to understand which customers were taking, and not taking, the new product. 🟢 Result – I worked with the leaders to adjust their strategy to improve take up, resulting in $X of additional sales. Demonstrate that you’re more valuable than just your technical solution with strong soft skills too. When you’re aiming for a Data and Analytics #Leadership role, share how you’ve developed the soft skills of others and driven outcomes. The A-I-R framework works well here too and proves you understand the business and team member growth you created using a tangible example. Something like… 🟢 Action – I invested time coaching my team to present with impact to the Executive Committee. 🟢 Impact – They understood how to communicate effectively and influence stakeholders. 🟢 Result – The Executives acted on the recommendations which created X for the business while the team grew their confidence and ability to interact with diverse stakeholders. Remember interviewers will quickly forget a fancy dashboard or #AI model, but they’ll remember the story about how you used your solutions and collaborated with your stakeholders to unlock that nugget of gold. That’s the power of soft skills. Be memorable. #LinkedInNewsAustralia #softskills

Training Tomorrow’s Leaders Today – Helping Gen Z Build Soft Skills Every rising generation enters the workplace armed with distinct advantages—and unique blind spots. For Generation Z, the first to be raised entirely in the digital age, their fluency with technology is unparalleled. They are adaptive in the mechanics of software, quick to decipher new platforms, and driven by a strong sense of purpose. Yet in their rush toward digital mastery, something essential has been left behind: the art of human connection. The historian knows this is no small matter. Civilizations rise not merely on technical innovation, but on the cohesion and trust that bind their people together. In the same way, corporations thrive not simply because of algorithms or quarterly forecasts, but because their people know how to communicate, resolve conflict, and lead with empathy. Studies confirm what many executives intuit: Gen Z employees often lack core interpersonal skills. Raised on screens rather than conversations, and further isolated by the pandemic, many missed the small but vital apprenticeships of human interaction—classroom debates, summer jobs, in-person mentorships. Without such practice, young professionals may falter when faced with criticism, collaboration, or sudden change. And yet, this gap is not destiny. Unlike raw IQ or technical prowess, soft skills can be deliberately trained. The very habits that once came through daily face-to-face interaction must now be cultivated through intentional practice. Mentorship, structured coaching, and real-world leadership opportunities can all accelerate this growth. For organizations, the task is clear: technical onboarding is not enough. Fortune 5000 companies that wish to remain competitive must elevate soft skills to the same level of priority as technical expertise. That means embedding communication, adaptability, and emotional intelligence into performance metrics; encouraging cross-generational mentorship; and fostering a culture of resilience through continuous learning. At DRWEBERCOACHING, we deploy frameworks such as the SOCIAL STYLE® Model and the Adaptive Mindset® program to equip Gen Z employees with practical tools for collaboration, feedback, and emotional regulation. These are not abstract ideals—they are the bedrock of a stable, adaptive workforce. As history reminds us, the societies that endure are those that invest in the character of their people as much as in their tools. The bottom line is simple: Gen Z’s technical fluency is an asset, but without soft skills, it risks becoming a brittle advantage. If we help this generation build the human skills of trust, adaptability, and leadership, we not only strengthen our organizations—we secure a legacy of resilience for the decades to come. #GenZWorkforce #SoftSkillsTraining #LeadershipDevelopment #FutureOfWork #ExecutiveCoaching

We keep hearing we must develop soft skills to succeed as professionals, but no one tells us HOW! Here are 12 actions you can take to improve your soft skills: The first three focus on the Process: 1. Identify and prioritize which soft skills you want to work on. You can’t work on all of them at once so clearly identifying which ones to focus on now will be helpful to get started and prevent feeling overwhelmed. 2. Take courses online or onsite, read books on these topics, and consider using a coach. 3. Monitor your progress. Write notes so you are aware of what you are aiming for and the progress you are making. This also includes time management and setting schedules and milestones, so you balance your personal and professional needs. There are many tech tools to help with this. The following nine focus on Skills: 4. Seek feedback. Ask your manager, colleagues, and significant others for input. 360 performance reviews can be very helpful. 5. Build rapport, show interest, tailor your communications to others, and when sending written communications, re-read before clicking “send”. 6. Emphasize teamwork. Collaboration, recognition and clarity of goals and priorities go a long way. Also leverage the diversity of thought, background and approach that others bring. 7. Manage disagreements. You don’t have to be disagreeable. Seek win-win solutions but also remember that some things are not worth wasting time and energy in an argument. 8. Build positive, constructive, supportive relationships. Seek others that are motivated and focused that will lift you up, not tear you down. 9. Get outside of your comfort zone. Volunteer to speak at meetings and association events. Think of creative ways of getting things done and solving problems. There are many tools for root cause analysis and generating/organizing ideas to help you broaden your thinking. 10. Adapt. Change is constant at work and our personal lives so try to prepare mentally to flow, especially when you can’t drive the change yourself. Some things we just have to accept and move on. 11. Listen and observe others. This means pay attention, talk less, and try to understand motives and reactions. 12. Practice. Set aside time to work on each soft skill. Many things you do alone, but some things are great to practice with a friend. Role-playing can be very helpful, especially before key events. Note: These actions should help you improve your collaboration, time management, communication, emotional intelligence, critical thinking, problem solving, public speaking, professional writing, teamwork, adaptability, work ethic and intercultural fluency skills. The skills that get you to director won't get you to VP. Technical expertise builds careers. Soft skills accelerate them. I've watched countless professionals hit plateaus Not because they lacked expertise, But because they underinvested in the fundamental skills that amplify impact. 8 Soft Skills That Drive Career Advancement: 1. Adaptability: Update your work habits regularly to match changing conditions instead of protecting comfortable routines. 2. Communication: Ask for specific feedback on how you come across rather than assuming your message lands as intended. 3. Emotional Intelligence: Use personality assessments as tools for understanding, not labeling yourself or others. 4. Continuous Learning: Join study groups to learn collectively rather than trying to master everything independently. 5. Time Management: Apply the Eisenhower Matrix to distinguish between urgent and important rather than treating everything as critical. 6. Teamwork: Learn to navigate disagreements productively instead of avoiding necessary conflict. 7. Strategic Thinking: Develop frameworks and analyses to make decisions based on data and logic rather than gut feelings alone. 8. Influence: Learn from leaders you admire by studying their approach, not just their achievements. The difference between good and exceptional often comes down to these foundational capabilities. What soft skill gap is holding back your next career move?
